The organisers of the annual Flower Festival in Chiang Mai are preparing to hold the 42nd edition. The festival begins this Friday, the 2 February, with a launch ceremony at Suan Buak Haad Park and finishes on Sunday. The awesome parade of floral floats and signature highlight of the flower fest will take place on Saturday.
The parade is scheduled to start from Chiang Mai Train Station at 08:00 in the morning. This year’s procession will feature 24 floats covered in flowers in all colours of the rainbow. Beauty queens, or sometimes a religious statue, sit on top of the floats while marchers in traditional Lanna outfits, dancers and school bands keep pace with the parade.
From Chiang Mai Train Station, the parade heads west along Charoen Muang Road and across the Ping River into Thapae Road. After reaching the landmark Thapae Gate, the retinue heads for the finish line at Suan Buak Haad Park. Flower vendors set up shop for the three days on the road outside the park. Roses, chrysanthemums, orchids, tulips, bonsai trees and the many other flowers grown by horticulturalists are on display and for sale.
Local OTOP (One Tambon One Product) producers will also be on hand outside the park with handicrafts, cosmetics and the like for sale. The pageant to select Miss Chiang Mai Flower Queen 2018 will be held at Suan Buak Haad on Saturday. At the Thapae Gate plaza, live music and shows are another part of the entertainment to enjoy between 18:00 and 22:00. A good choice of food and drink, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, enhance the enticements to join in the fun on Saturday evening.
