THE WHAT’S UP GUIDE TO SOPPONG ACTIVITIES

Lod Cave

Caving ranks near the top of the list of popular Soppong activities because this particular part of northern Thailand boasts no fewer than four caves with lengths of more than four kilometres. Fossil Cave, Lod Cave, and Waterfall Cave are merely the most frequently visited of Soppong’s more than 200 known limestone caves. Lod Cave is also a popular stop during Lang River kayaking expeditions. Many Soppong guided trekking tours include caving and bamboo rafting adventures.

CAVING IN SOPPONG

At least five of the over 200 limestone caves which have been discovered in Soppong are more than four kilometres long. Not much is known about the 83 tham pi man caves aside from the fact the prehistoric wooden coffins within these spirit caves are about 1,700 years old. Some of these spirit caves are located not far from the main road to Mae Hong Son. Two more notable Soppong caving experiences are Waterfall Cave, named after its 30m waterfall, and Fossil Cave, whose fossils are about 280 million years old.

TREKKING IN SOPPONG

Trekking expeditions can be arranged by many Soppong guesthouses as well as at least one trekking agency. These guided treks are between one and three days long. Hill tribe village visits, caving adventures, and even bamboo rafting are part of several Soppong trekking tour itineraries. Soppong may not be as familiar to many tourists as Pai, but the Karen, Lahu, and Lisu villages on most trekking tour itineraries are well acquainted with foreign visitors. One village, Ban Nong Thong, can be easily reached by foot from Soppong.

KAYAKING IN SOPPONG

Kayaking along the small rapids of the Lang River is another popular way to explore Soppong. Many of these two to three hour expeditions aboard inflated rubber kayaks include a thrilling journey through Lod Cave, where headlamps provide the only light to see the cave’s limestone formations, rapids, and bats.
