Bo Sang Umbrella Festival annually held on the third weekend of January. It is one of the most popular festivals in Chiang Mai. Only 9 km from Chiang Mai downtown on the San Kamphaeng Road is a small village of Bo Sang where the festival takes place. The origin dates back over a hundred years, a legend states that a Buddhist monk travelled to Myanmar and learned how to create Saa Paper umbrellas for sunshine and rain protecting. He brought this technique when returned to Bo Sang Village and it became a way to make money since then.
During the festival, the streets are filled with hundreds of lanterns and umbrellas. There are also cultural performances, beauty contest, local food stalls, a parasols parade and demonstrations of umbrella making. All participants are dressed in the traditional Lanna style and dress.
