The Chiang Mai segment of this year’s Japanese Film Festival is due to open on 23 February with an offering from one of Japan’s top directors. Sunao Katabuchi’s animated drama In This Corner of the World is set during WWII and is the opener for the Chiang Mai leg of the Japanese film fest.
The SFX Cinema at the city’s MAYA lifestyle and shopping mall is the venue for a weekend of top Japanese films. In This Corner of the World will show at 19:00 on the Thursday and will be followed by Harmonium on Friday at 18:30. On Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 February there are three different films to choose from on both days and the first showings are at 14:00.
Saturday’s and Sunday’s films are Chihayafuru parts I and II, Sweet Bean, Sanada Ten Braves, The Top Secret: Murder in Mind, and Creepy. Although the films have Japanese language soundtracks, most also come with subtitles in both English and Thai script.
