Jetstar Pacific has launched a new route which links the city of Dong Hoi in central Vietnam and Chiang Mai. The maiden flight took off last Friday. Flights now operate twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays, in each direction. Flights are in the afternoons and flying time is 1 hour 40 minutes.
Jetstar Pacific has a fleet of Airbus A320s configured for 180 passengers and is using these to provide service on the route. According to media sources in Vietnam, the maiden flight from Dong Hoi was just about full and there were less than 30 vacant seats when the return flight departed from Chiang Mai Airport. Earlier this week, Jetstar Pacific confirmed more than 5,000 passengers had booked flights on the route.
Based at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat Airport, Jetstar Pacific is a budget airline and is 70 per cent owned by Vietnam Airlines. In keeping with Jetstar’s aims of offering affordable travel choices, basic fares for the Dong Hoi-Chiang Mai flights are cheap and begin at just THB1,670.
Although Bangkok was traditionally the main air gateway to Thailand, airlines nowadays fly direct to Chiang Mai, Phuket and Krabi. Chiang Mai has international links with Asian cities including Hong Kong, Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Yangon. Qatar Airways has confirmed Doha to Chiang Mai flights are set to launch in December and provide travellers with streamlined connections to the Middle East and Europe.
