The What’s Up Guide to Pai Transportation

Pai Bus Station

Travel to and around Pai is much easier than back in the days when the journey between this once-isolated community and its closest major city, Chiang Mai, took up to a week. Today, most Pai visitors travel the 150kms from Chiang Mai via the scenic Mae Hong Son Loop, officially known as Route 1095 and fully paved since the 1990s.

 By Motorbike and Car
Motorbikes & Cars, those who prefer to drive their own automobile or motorcycle along the Mae Hong Son Loop should be aware that the main thoroughfare to Pai is not only very scenic, but also very steep and winding. People prone to motion sickness should bring pills and plastic bags prior to navigating the 762 curves they will encounter on Route 1095 from Chiang Mai to Pai.

Motorists should not try to drive too fast along Route 1095, not only for safety reasons, but also to better soak in the stunning mountain scenery. Another advantage of driving instead of flying or riding the bus is that motorists can stop at any number of scenic villages and waterfalls at their own pace on their way to Pai.

Traffic is typically light along this section of the Mae Hong Son Loop and motorcyclists typically have no trouble hearing the approach of larger vehicles. Motorcyclists should set aside five to six hours to travel from Chiang Mai to Pai and bring warm clothing to feel comfortable at the region’s higher altitudes.

If you plan on renting a car we recommend you check with Rentalcars.com. Rentalcars.com is our preferred partner and is a global car hire provider offering competitive daily rental rates in Thailand.

GETTING AROUND

Even though Chaisongkran Road, Pai’s main drag, has more than its fair share of travel agents offering guided bus tours, the community itself is small enough to comfortably navigate on foot. Bicycles and motorcycles, both of which can be easily rented at any of Chaisongkran Road’s travel agents, are the best ways to travel around Pai’s surrounding area. Motorcyclists should expect to pay extra for both theft and damage insurance, and can also choose to return their motorcycles in Chiang Mai. Four wheel drive taxis are Pai’s most common means of public transportation.
